Follow your heart
So easily said. Follow your heart and you will find happiness.
Very difficult to do.
The universe is designed to support you to follow your heart, but mankind, and the social rules and policies that have evolved over a period of time, are completely out of whack with that design.
Once you choose a career stream, it’s not easy to change, unless you’re well connected, or very very good or lucky.
You might want to follow your heart, but your financial situation will hold you hostage.
If not that, then relationship or peer pressures will come in the way.
So what differentiates people who HAVE followed their hearts, because in spite of the roadblocks, there are several success stories. And while you will find a small percentage of stories in the public domain i.e. Celebrities, Entrepreneurs etc. There are millions of stories of everyday heroism, which don’t make the news.
The key difference is their belief in AND versus OR.
They will have financial freedom AND follow their heart’s desire.
The find ways to manage their relationships AND follow the life they want to.
Is this easy? No. It’s difficult. But…and get this, it’s not impossible. There is a huge difference between the word Difficult and Impossible. We often confuse the two.
So why don’t you start now. Make a list of 2 things that you would love to do. List out the compromises that seem associated with getting those things. Then make a note of how you will deal with the compromises, so that they aren’t compromises.
Your mind will tend to think in only one way. So talk to a few other people. People who you like and are close to, are likely to think like you. So choose people who’re different. They’ll open up new perspectives and ways and means.
Old adages always hold true. They’re like principles. One key principle is, you will reap only what you sow.
As you identify all the things you want to do in your life. Some will be available immediately, because those seeds you sowed long ago in life. Others will require some sowing. Begin today!
Sow time – to learn something new. To practice a new skill.
Sow money – invest. Build a nest egg that will give you financial freedom in a few years.
Seek – knowledge and learning that will lead you on a new path
Sow in relationships – connect, build a network. That will help you as you follow your path, in opening up doors.
It’s all about strategy. Once you’ve got this plan in place. Execute with rigour and discipline. Watch your life change. Mine did.
Here’s Seth Godin’s take on a similar line but with a different thought. I like it.
